Kim Hye Soo Opens Up About the Serious Injury She Faced While Filming Unmasked

On the morning of January 8, a press conference for the Disney+ original series Unmasked took place in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. The event was joined by the director Yoo Seon Dong, known for The Uncanny Counter and Bad and Crazy, along with actors Kim Hye Soo, Jung Sung Il, and Joo Jong Hyuk.

Kim Hye Soo also delivers some incredible action scenes in Unmasked. Speaking about the intense action sequences, she revealed, “While filming this project, I ended up injuring myself quite seriously, tearing my thigh muscle along with a few other injuries that I didn’t even notice at first. In my daily life, I tend to be very cautious and sometimes even fearful. But when the cameras start rolling, something changes. As an actor, I feel a different kind of strength and determination that pushes me to keep going, even through the pain.” Her dedication to the role and the challenges she faced on set highlight her commitment to bringing the action-packed drama to life.

Unmasked follows a team of determined investigative journalists who don’t wait for the perfect moment to ask tough questions—they shove a camera in the faces of bad guys and confront them head-on. The series captures their relentless pursuit of justice as they go after those who think they can escape the law.

Director Yoo Seon Dong explained that Unmasked is “a lively and thrilling story about the investigative journalism team called Trigger. These journalists expose and punish dangerous villains—those whom even the police and prosecutors cannot catch. They do this by filming these criminals in the act and revealing their wrongdoings to the world, shining a light on the truth no matter how dark or hidden it may be.” With a unique blend of action and investigative drama, the series promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Kim Hye Soo, playing Oh So Ryong, the leader of Trigger, described Unmasked as a series that tackles serious issues and crimes but does so with a light, engaging tone. She said, “The story blends meaningful messages, humor, sincerity, and catharsis, which resonated with me—that’s why I chose it.”

Director Yoo Seon Dong praised Kim Hye Soo, stating he couldn’t picture anyone else in the role. He noted, “She gives everything to her work, just like her character, Oh So Ryong. That’s why she’s at the top of her field.”

Jung Sung Il, portraying Han Do, a well-mannered yet arrogant newbie, shared, “This is my second time working with director Yoo Seon Dong after Bad and Crazy.”

Joo Jong Hyuk plays Kang Ki Ho, an eager but inexperienced assistant director. He explained, “Ki Ho deeply respects team leader Oh So Ryong and works hard at his job. Though he’s a contract worker, he’s frustrated by his lack of permanence and feels inferior when Han Do joins the team, but he also compromises.”

Director Yoo Seon Dong shared that Joo Jong Hyuk reminded him of his own past as a contract worker, aspiring to be a director. He said, “Joo Jong Hyuk’s performance captured the struggles I faced during that time. He did an amazing job portraying Ki Ho.”

On the show’s appeal, Yoo Seon Dong highlighted its variety, from the team’s undercover work infiltrating a cult to thrilling action sequences, including a paragliding scene. He added, “There are moments that feel like a psychological thriller.”

Jung Sung Il mentioned his first-time experience paragliding for the drama, saying, “It was completely new to me.”

Kim Hye Soo discussed her role preparation, saying, “I wore the same clothes as real investigative journalists and studied their routines. I noticed details like the mini suitcase and backpack they carry for long trips, which I incorporated into my character’s portrayal.”

In conclusion, director Yoo Seon Dong shared his excitement about Unmasked, saying, “This is the first Disney+ project to premiere in 2025. While the drama is set in Korea and addresses cases that Korean viewers will find familiar and relatable, I believe the universal themes and compelling storytelling will resonate with audiences around the world.”

Unmasked is set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ on January 15, 2025. The series will consist of 12 episodes, with two episodes released each week, keeping viewers engaged with its intense and action-packed storyline. With its global release, the drama aims to connect with audiences not just in Korea, but across the globe.
