Squid Game

The series tells the story of 456 people, all facing serious money problems, who join a secret contest. They risk their lives by playing deadly versions of children’s games for a chance to win a huge prize of ₩45.6 billion. The title comes from a popular Korean children’s game. The idea for the series came from the creator, Hwang, who was inspired by his own financial struggles, the gap between rich and poor in South Korea, and the effects of capitalism. Although Hwang wrote the story in 2009, no production company wanted to fund it until Netflix showed interest in 2019 as part of their plan to include more international content.
